Generational Art and the Belief in PRACTICE

Table of Contents

It’s a well known fact that children emulate what they are surrounded by.  And there’s something to be said for a household that surrounds a child in art;

To have discussions around structure and form and composition.

To have the artistic process demonstrated.

For a child to see the joys and struggles of being a professional artist.

My mother was a professionally trained designer who also worked as a professional watercolour painter for many years. Memories of visits to my grandparents in Alberta are full of the ochres and browns of my grandma’s exploration into 70s macrame and sand formed handmade candles. These were relegated to the basement and the main floor was filled with dusty purples and grey-blue from her foray into oil painting in the 80s and 90s.

Though I never took a high school art class and as a youth and young adult had no intention of ever doing art professionally, life had a different path in mind. One day at The Forks there was a busker painting faces with a skinny little brush and it was the first time I had ever seen anyone face painting with anything other than crayons. I remember standing and watching her while my young sons pulled on my arms in different directions and slowly realizing that I wanted to try that. I wanted to create something beautiful that even though temporary, would be something that others could enjoy and appreciate. It was a profound experienced since I had often seen first-hand the off-putting phenomenon that every professional artist seems to endure;

The phenom that Everyone’s A Critic.

It had often horrified me to be at an art show where I knew first-hand the time, sweat, and tears that an artist put into creating their work, only to have someone who had likely never held a brush, pick apart the work of that artist. I knew that my flimsy little 20-something ego could have never endured such trauma. But this? Face painting? To children who knew no better and loved what I created on them, no matter how terrible it truly was? Their faces were the canvas and face paint was the medium I needed to grow and develop the artistic seeds that had been planted by my mother and grandmother. Though I can honestly say that there is not a grain of genetically intuitive artistic skill in my body, the setting of my childhood, being surrounded and influenced by artists, developed the belief in plain old PRACTICE. If you do something long enough, you’ll (eventually) get good at it.

At cARTizan studio, we believe in surrounding your child with an environment of creativity.  We believe in giving kids a place where they are taught that success comes with practice and that they are capable of gaining new skills that they can use to create great and beautiful things.

1. Mentorship Matters

Our experienced instructors don’t just teach—they mentor. They work closely with each student to understand their goals, strengths, and challenges.

2. Literacy as a Foundation

At cARTizan studio literacy is the foundation for our projects. From projects revolving around popular illustrators to learning about the lives of famous artists to the elements of art that can be found in the natural world, our lessons aren’t just about making art. They are about the stories and lessons behind where the art began.

3. Hands-On Learning

From sculpting to kid-built doodles robots to tempera and glitter, we encourage students to explore different mediums and discover what works best for them.

4. Exposure to Opportunities

We regularly host art contests, gallery exhibitions, and portfolio-building workshops to help students grow their presence in the art world.
